Summer in Dubai is brutal on engines — stop-start traffic, AC on full, and 45°C+ outside. Overheating is one of the breakdowns we attend most from May to September. Here's how to handle it without wrecking the engine.
If your car is overheating in Dubai: switch the AC off, turn the heater to full hot with the fan on maximum, and pull over somewhere safe as soon as you can. Switch the engine off and wait at least 30 minutes before touching the radiator or coolant cap — never open it hot. If the temperature climbs straight back into the red after restarting, or you see steam or smell sweet coolant, don't drive on: a few more kilometres can destroy the head gasket. Call recovery and have it carried to a garage.
Watch the gauge, not just the light. By the time a warning light appears, the engine is already hot. Glancing at the temperature needle in heavy traffic on Al Khail Road or Sheikh Zayed Road in July gives you minutes of warning that the light doesn't.
An engine's cooling system has a safety margin. Dubai summers use all of it — so any small weakness that would go unnoticed in winter becomes a breakdown in July. The causes we see most:
| Cause | Typical clue | Usual fix |
|---|---|---|
| Low coolant / slow leak | Level drops between services; drips under the car | Find and fix leak, refill correct coolant |
| Radiator fan not working | Overheats when idling, fine at speed | Replace fan motor, relay or fuse |
| Radiator blocked by dust & sand | Gradual worsening over months | Radiator flush / clean or replace |
| Failed thermostat | Gauge rises quickly from a cold start | Replace thermostat |
| Water pump failure | Squeal, leak from the front of engine | Replace pump (often with timing belt) |
| Split or perished hose | Sudden steam and big coolant loss | Replace hose — don't drive meanwhile |
Dust and sand matter more here than drivers think. Cars that regularly use roads near open desert — Dubai South, Al Qudra or the E611 corridor — collect fine sand in the radiator fins, slowly reducing airflow until a hot day tips it over.
This is the decision that decides whether you're paying for a new hose or a new engine. Be honest with yourself:
| Situation | Our advice |
|---|---|
| Needle rose a little in traffic, dropped back with heater on | Drive gently to a garage soon; get it checked this week. |
| Needle in the red, came down after cooling, coolant topped up | A short, careful drive to a nearby garage may be OK — watch the gauge the whole time. |
| Goes straight back into the red after restarting | Don't drive. Call recovery. |
| Steam, sweet smell, white exhaust smoke, or coolant pouring out | Don't drive. Possible hose failure or head gasket. |
| Oil warning light, knocking noise, or engine cut out by itself | Don't restart. Have it carried on a flatbed. |
A tow costs a fraction of a cylinder-head repair. When in doubt, it's the cheaper choice. Our car towing service carries overheated cars on flatbeds so the engine isn't run again, and we can take it straight to your garage — call +971 56 297 1960.
Never pour cold water onto a hot engine or into a hot radiator. The sudden temperature change can crack metal parts.
